The ancient Colentum
Colentum is a Roman settlement consisting of numerous ruins of Roman summer houses, frescoes and mosaics scattered on land and sea. Today, the remains of the ancient city have been largely covered by the sea, and they lie at the foot of Gradine hill. The coins of the Roman emperors Nero and Vespasian were found during the first archaeological research carried out from 1907 to 1909. It is assumed that Colentum was demolished and looted by pirates at the beginning of the 2nd century. Most of the territory of the archaeological site is now privately owned. The remains today make up the archaeological park Colentum with an arboretum, a promenade by the sea, an archaeologically themed beach, an underwater promenade, a promenade with viewpoints on wooden walls, and educational and play areas.
