          MURTER ISLAND

          Where history and nature meet

Murter is a northern Dalmatian island with an area of 17.58 square kilometers in Šibenik-Knin County. The island is connected to the mainland by a short 12-meter-long bridge in Tisno. There are four settlements on this lovely island – Murter, Betina, Jezera, and Tisno and it has been inhabited for almost two millennia. Today the island of Murter is an important tourist destination with numerous cultural and historical sights, natural beaches, and uninhabited islands in the immediate vicinity. As the island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, it can easily be visited by car, and the island can also be reached by boat, ferry, or private boat. When they arrive on the island, visitors can explore numerous beaches such as Slanica, Kosirina, Bisaga, and Sveti Andrija. Various small coves and bays can be visited by boat.

          SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

The key to preserving natural beauty and local culture

Traditional settlements provide an insight into the local way of life. The beaches are full of various cafes, and restaurants, as well as small shops where visitors can buy local souvenirs and products. A popular activity on the island is sailing, as the island is surrounded by numerous islands and islets that visitors can explore, so many sailing schools are present on the island. Murter has a long and rich history. The island was inhabited by the Illyrians since prehistoric times. The remains of the Roman settlement Colentum, which consists of numerous ruins of Roman summer houses, frescoes, and mosaics scattered on land and sea, bear witness to the time of Roman rule. The island of Murter got its name in 1740.

          ARHAEOLOGICAL PARK

          The ancient Colentum

Colentum is a Roman settlement consisting of numerous ruins of Roman summer houses, frescoes and mosaics scattered on land and sea. Today, the remains of the ancient city have been largely covered by the sea, and they lie at the foot of Gradine hill. The coins of the Roman emperors Nero and Vespasian were found during the first archaeological research carried out from 1907 to 1909. It is assumed that Colentum was demolished and looted by pirates at the beginning of the 2nd century. Most of the territory of the archaeological site is now privately owned. The remains today make up the archaeological park Colentum with an arboretum, a promenade by the sea, an archaeologically themed beach, an underwater promenade, a promenade with viewpoints on wooden walls, and educational and play areas.

Sustainable tourism on island Murter is key in protecting the island's delicate balance of nature for the future generations to enjoy.

A place of great archaeological significance

          Murter's special features

The Kornati National Park is part of the island of Murter, which consists of over 140 islands, islets, rocks, and reefs that are known for their natural beauty.

Colentum is an ancient Roman city of exceptional historical and cultural importance due to the archaeological sites in that place.

Murter has many bicycle paths that allow you to explore all the beauties of the island.

Slanica beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island of Murter and is 2 kilometers from the town center.
