          CROATIA'S WATERFALL PARADISE

Explore the natural wonders of Krka national park

Krka is a national park that stretches along the Krka River. Krka received the status of a national park on January 24, 1985. The park is located in central Dalmatia, downstream from Knin, and only a few kilometers from the town of Šibenik. The Krka River rises at the foot of Mount Dinara near Knin, flows through a 75-kilometer-long channel, flows through Lake Prokljan and flows into the Gulf of Šibenik. The park covers 109 square kilometers, of which 25.6 square kilometers are water surface. The Krka River with its seven travertine waterfalls is a natural karst phenomenon.

Due to its peculiar location and different types of habitats, the area of the Krka River is characterized by extremely rich flora and fauna. 1186 plant species and subspecies have been identified in the Park area. The park is home to many amphibians, reptiles, and endemic fish species. Krka is extremely important for the spring and autumn migration of birds.

The area of the Krka River abounds in cultural and historical monuments, traces of human creativity from prehistory to the present day. There are the remains of the Roman Scardona waterworks, the remains of the Roman military camp Burnum and the remains of medieval Croatian forts from the 14th century: Trošenja, Nečvena, Bogočina, Kamička and Ključica, which, in terms of dimensions and preservation, is one of the most important fortifications in Croatia. Among the sacred buildings, the most valuable are the Franciscan church of Our Lady of Visovačka and the monastery of the Mother of Mercy on the islet of Visovac and the monastery of Krka (St. Archangel). Numerous water mills and stupas are monuments of rural construction. The special beauty of the park is given by seven waterfalls, including Skradinski Buk, which is the longest waterfall system in Croatia and is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

The main attraction on the island is the oldest monastery in Croatia, the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the church of Our Lady of Visovačka. The monastery is an extremely important cultural and historical site. Visitors to the island can get to know the history of the monastery with a guide and see all its beauties. The island is located in the middle of Lake Visovac, so visitors have the opportunity to participate in various activities such as swimming, diving or fishing.
